Run Plex without a NAS by keeping media in cloud storage and mounting it on the computer running Plex Media Server. Seedr supplies the files; Plex still needs a running host, a readable library path and separate remote-access configuration.

## What this gets you

- A working Plex library with no hard drives to buy or babysit.
- Add files from anywhere (phone, browser, extension), watch on any Plex client.
- Metadata, posters, season/episode matching, multi-user profiles — all the normal Plex features.
- No 24/7 home PC holding the media. You still run Plex Media Server somewhere, but it stays light.

You do not get: a magical Plex setup with zero server. You still need Plex Media Server running somewhere — on a laptop that is sometimes on, a mini PC, or a cheap VPS. It just does not need local media drives.

## What you need

- **Seedr plan**: Master (or higher) for WebDAV. Pro for FTP. WebDAV is the better fit for Plex libraries on desktop.
- **Plex Media Server** installed on Windows, macOS, Linux, or a NAS that runs Plex.
- **A free Plex account** to sign the server in. Plex Pass is optional (details below).
- **Mount tool** if your OS does not speak WebDAV natively: [RaiDrive](<https://www.raidrive.com/>) on Windows/Linux, or Finder on macOS.

## Setup, step by step

### 1. Mount Seedr as a drive on the Plex server machine

Use the same device that runs Plex Media Server. Plex reads the library from the filesystem, so the mount must exist there, not on your phone.

- **Windows**: install RaiDrive → Add → WebDAV → URL https://dav.seedr.cc → your Seedr email + password → assign drive letter Z:.
- **macOS**: Finder → **Go → Connect to Server** (⌘K) → https://dav.seedr.cc → sign in. The mount appears under **Locations**.
- **Linux**: davfs2 or RaiDrive. For davfs2: add an entry in /etc/fstab, mount to /mnt/seedr.

### 2. Make a clean folder structure inside Seedr

Plex matches by filename. Use:

- Movies/Movie Name (Year)/Movie Name (Year).mp4
- TV/Show Name/Season 01/Show Name - S01E01.mkv

Rename files inside Seedr's web UI before pointing Plex at them. Bad filenames cause "Unmatched" items later.

### 3. Add the library in Plex

1. Open Plex at http://localhost:32400/web.
2. Sidebar → **+** next to **Libraries**.
3. Pick a type (**Movies** or **TV Shows**).
4. **Add Folders** → browse to the mounted path (Z:\\Movies on Windows, /Volumes/dav.seedr.cc/Movies on macOS, /mnt/seedr/Movies on Linux).
5. **Add Library**. Plex scans, matches, fetches artwork.

### 4. Add new content later

Drop download links into Seedr from any device. On the next library scan (**Scan Library Files** in Plex), the new titles appear. Schedule scans under **Settings → Library → Scan my library automatically**.

## Troubleshooting

- **"Library scan produced no files"** — the mount is not visible to the Plex service account. On Windows, network drives mapped in your user session are invisible to Plex running as a service. Fix: run Plex as your user, or use a tool (RaiDrive Pro, NetDrive) that mounts at the system level.
- **Matches wrong movie / marks as "Unmatched"** — filename is the cause 90% of the time. Rename to Title (Year) and use **Fix Match** in Plex.
- **Video buffers every few seconds** — Plex is transcoding. Check **Now Playing** in Plex. If it says "Transcode", either allow the client to direct-play the file (set client quality to "Original") or pick formats Plex can direct-stream (H.264 MP4/MKV with AAC audio).
- **Scans take forever on huge folders over WebDAV** — split into subfolders. WebDAV listings slow down past a few hundred files per directory. Or switch the library to an FTP mount for faster listing.
- **Connection drops after a few hours** — RaiDrive reconnect option on. On macOS, Finder WebDAV mounts tend to unmount on sleep; a systemd (Linux) or LaunchAgent (macOS) davfs2 mount is more persistent.

## What works well, and known limits

**Works well**

- Direct play of common formats (H.264 MP4/MKV, AAC/AC3 audio).
- Metadata matching, posters, watched state, profiles — identical to a local library.
- Multiple Plex clients streaming at once, as long as your Plex server + upstream can carry it.

**Known limits**

- **Transcoding** happens on your Plex server's CPU/GPU, not in Seedr. A weak mini PC will choke on 4K HEVC → 1080p H.264 transcodes. Plex Pass + a supported GPU enables hardware transcoding and is worth it for 4K libraries.
- **Offline sync** (Plex Pass feature) copies files off the cloud to a device — that is a local download, counts against your Seedr bandwidth.
- **Cancel Seedr → library goes dark**. Plex keeps the metadata but can't read the files. Pull anything you want to keep before you cancel.

## Wrap

No NAS, no drive rebuilds, no 24/7 home PC full of disks. Plex still does the organizing; Seedr holds the files; WebDAV is the glue.

## Ready to run Plex with zero drives?

## Keep the server in the picture

- Run the media server on a supported host that stays available while you watch.
- Mount or copy the files onto a path readable by that server account. A mount on your phone is not a mount on the server.
- Test one library item before scanning a large collection; remote access and transcoding still belong to the media server.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can cloud storage replace Plex Media Server?

No. It can replace some local media storage, but Plex Media Server must still run somewhere.

### Is a NAS required?

No. A supported computer can run the server. It still needs access to the media and sufficient resources for your playback route.
